Nanomaterials for Solution-Processed OLEDs

Avantama is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of functional nanomaterials for printed electronics. Our expertise spans comprehensive nanoparticle engineering, formulation, and functionalization of custom solutions for high-value electronic and optical products. This empowers us to supply bespoke products for a wide range of established markets, whether their production methods are conventional or more cutting-edge.

One of our key competencies is in the production of functional nanomaterials for solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). We can supply a range of off-the-shelf nanoparticle inks for electron and electron-hole transport materials, which facilitate electron mobility in solution-processed OLED stacks.

Solution-Processed OLEDs from Avantama

Currently, solution-processed OLED panels are largely confined to research and development (R&D) spaces, though innovative prototypes have been unveiled by manufacturers around the world. At Avantama, we offer a broad range of standard formulations suitable for electron transport functions in emerging solution-processed OLED arrays and lighting.

Our off-the-shelf portfolio comprises several proprietary formulations based on tailor-made nanoparticles dispersed in a choice of solvents. While our primary objective is to provide customers with bespoke nanomaterials that are rigorously optimized for their unique production conditions, we recognize the value of having an industry-proven range of nanomaterials ready-to-order.

Zinc Oxide Nanomaterials

Several of our core products are composed of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles centered around a particle size distribution of 12 nanometres (nm), with work functions from 3.9 electronvolts (eV) We offer ZnO nanomaterials for solution-processed OLEDs in a range of solvents, including 2-propanol and ethanol. Aluminium-doped nanoparticles (Al:ZnO) are also available upon request. For more information, refer to our previous article on ZnO Nanoparticles from Avantama.

Stannic Oxide for OLEDs

Stannic oxide, or tin dioxide (SnO2), is another advantageous material for optoelectronic applications when in the form of extremely small nanoparticles (approx. 7nm) in solution. We offer SnO2 nanoparticles in a mixture of butanols for solution-processed OLEDs, chiefly for electron mobility functions where long-lasting photostability is essential.

Read our article on The Properties and Applications of SnO2 Nanoparticles for more details.

Tungsten Trioxide Nanoparticles

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) satisfies a unique niche in solution-processed OLEDs and other printed electronics applications, excelling as a hole transport material with a remarkably high work function (5.5 eV). At Avantama, we offer WO3 nanoparticles of 16nm in a 2-propanol dispersant. This unique formulation has already excelled as a buffer layer in solution-processed photoelectronic stacks.

Nickel Oxide Nanomaterials

The last of our standard formulations are dispersions of small nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles of just 7nm in ethanol. Like WO3 nanoparticles, our NiO solution excels as an electron hole transport material for solution-processed OLEDs, particularly those generated via spin coating or slot die printing.
